Hidden Oasis

Originally designed in the 1950s by architect Alton McCaul Bowers, this hidden inner-city bungalow was a beautifully crafted blend of exposed timber, cedar panels, and precast concrete—yet had fallen into severe deterioration after years of vacancy. Rather than allowing this architectural gem to be replaced by generic infill townhouses, the project focused on preserving its character while transforming it into a modern 3,000 sq.ft residence.

A new second floor and south-facing great-room extension were added, maintaining the iconic precast-concrete courtyard and enhancing indoor–outdoor living with ceiling-height glazing and multiple patios. The reimagined layout includes four bedrooms and flexible semi-private suites ideal for multi-generational living. Structural upgrades, hydronic infloor heating, new triple-pane windows, and a rebuilt thermal envelope ensure long-term performance and comfort.

Through thoughtful design and careful negotiation with the City and community, the renovation protects the home's architectural heritage while introducing contemporary livability—creating a uniquely balanced, award-winning fusion of history, craftsmanship, and modern life.
